The Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens
Welcome to the Pamplemousses Gardens.Classified as one of the best botanical gardens of our Universe,it was created under, Mahé de Labourdonnais,the First French governor.The Chateau Mont Plaisir,which still lies in the middle of these gardens with its own story to tell,was used as a residence for the governors of the country before Chateau le Reduit was built.
Later the gardens were developed considerably by Pierre Poivre.In the gardens one can admire palmists,laurels,creepers and bougainvilleas, teak,mahangony,kamphur,Talipots(which are believd to blossom only once in sixty years before dying and of course the giant water lilies which are marvels to the eyes(see picture).An ancient sugar mill and giant tortoises can be found in these gardens.There is also a monument of Paul and Virginie there. |
